Mink

This mink was spotted running across a beach car park with a fish in his mouth. Apologies for his "sun halo" in the second picture - he was moving fast and I did not have time to shield the lens! He appeared to be living in a little den in the foundations of someone's summer house.

Sola

This view was taken from Eikeberget near Tjelta, in Sola.
You can see Stavanger International Airport, the outskirts of the city and the Ullandhaug communications tower. In the far distance are the snow-capped mountains of the Ryfylke region.

Sola Ruinkirke

Sola "ruinkirke" or ruined church was a 12th century romanesque church which was in use until as late as 1842. It then fell into ruin, and was further dismantled in 1940 by the occupying German forces who took stones from the walls. Following an architectural competition in 1989 (won by Louis Kloster), it was rebuilt using the original stones and with the addition of modern glass in parts of the walls, roof and doors.
It was re-consecrated in 1995.

Jentene på Flatholmen

This statue stands by the harbour in Tananger, and commemorates the bravery of sisters Ester (15) and Bertine (12), known now as the "Flatholmen girls".
It was a stormy day in January 1894 when these two girls tried to save their lighthousekeeper father and two brothers from drowning. Returning from a trip ashore the father and sons were trying to get back to the isolated lighthouse on Flatholmen Island, where the lighthousekeeper had left his two daughters and baby son alone. Seeing their boat capsize in heavy seas, the two girls quickly launched a small rowing boat and managed to rescue one brother (aged 8). Sadly their father and the other brother perished.
Despite being four fatherless children alone, and cut off by the storm, they lit the light that night in Flatholmen Lighthouse.
