Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock) is an unusual, and therefore famous, rock formation standing 604m above the Lysefjord. It is a large, flat slab of rock jutting out above the water, whereas the other cliff tops are rounded. Rumour has it that it used to be a Viking place of sacrifice, but these days 100,000 hikers climb to the top each year without coming to any harm!

This sculpture stands on its own column overlooking Stavanger Harbour. It was created by Arnold Haukeland in 1968 and consists of seven separate parts taken from seven different ships. It is dedicated to all sailors lost at sea.
Locals refer to it affectionately as "the shrimp".
