Nothingness #3

"Meditation is all about the pursuit of nothingness.
 It's like the ultimate rest.
It's better than the best sleep you've ever had.
It's a quieting of the mind.
It sharpens everything, especially your appreciation of your surroundings.
 It keeps life fresh."

Hugh Jackman

Nothingness #2

“Emptiness
which is conceptually liable to be mistaken for sheer nothingness
is in fact the reservoir of infinite possibilities.”

D.T.Suzuki

Nothingness

"It is not good to talk about Zen, because Zen is nothingness ......
If you talk about it, you are always lying, and if you don't talk about it,
no-one knows it is there."
Robert M. Pirsig

(It seems fitting that this photo was taken from Tananger Harbour, where Mr. Pirsig once lived on his boat for a year, whilst researching his second book.)

Love Interruption

Lyrics from Jack White's "Love Interruption".
But how did they end up on the side of a building in Stavanger?

"An infinite expectation of the dawn"

"We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn, which does not forsake us even in our soundest sleep."
Henry David Thoreau

Night, the beloved ....

"Night, the beloved.  Night, when words fade and things come alive.  When the destructive analysis of day is done, and all that is truly important becomes whole and sound again.  When man reassembles his fragmentary self and grows with the calm of a tree."

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Chanson d'automne

Les sanglots longs
Des violons
De l'automne
Blessent mon coeur
D'une langueur
Monotone.

Tout suffocant
Et blême, quand
Sonne l'heure,
Je me souviens
Des jours anciens
Et je pleure

Et je m'en vais
Au vent mauvais
Qui m'emporte
Deçà, delà,
Pareil à la
Feuille morte.

Paul Verlaine

Sunset #40

I find there is a quality to being alone that is incredibly precious.
Life rushes back into the void, richer, more vivid, fuller than before.”

Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Reflection #22

I cannot be awake,
for nothing looks to me as it did before.
Or else I am awake for the first time,
and all before has been a mean sleep.

Reflection #20

Reflections are irresistible to me, but this one was particularly appealing because this window in Skundeneshavn had famous quotations printed on it.
"Humankind is like a blind man who dreams of being able to see."

Light #2

"Sometimes just looking up and seeing the light is enough."

Terri Guillemets

Waves #2

“A wave in the sea, seen in one way, seems to have a distinct identity, an end and a beginning, a birth and a death. Seen in another way, the wave doesn’t really exist, but is just the behaviour of water, “empty” of any separate identity, but “full” of water. So when you really think about the wave, you come to realize that it is something that has been made temporarily possible by wind and water, and is dependent on a set of constantly changing circumstances. You also realize that every wave is related to every other wave.”

Gazing into the darkness

"All great and beautiful work has come of first gazing without shrinking into the darkness."

John Ruskin

Darkness and Light

For Rose

“Light thinks it travels faster than anything, but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.”

Terry Pratchett

Awake

"Every man has to learn the points of compass again as often as he awakes, whether from sleep or any abstraction. Not till we are lost, in other words, not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves, and realize where we are and the infinite extent of our relations."

Henry David Thoreau

Light painting #2

“Questions are a burden to others; answers a prison for oneself.”

Quote from The Prisoner cult 1960s TV series

The "medium through which we look"

"It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful; but it is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look ....... To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts."

Henry David Thoreau

“I hold this to be the highest task for a bond between two people: that each protects the solitude of the other”.

Rainer Maria Rilke

Wonderment

"The finest emotion of which we are capable is the mystic emotion. Herein lies the germ of all art and all true science. Anyone to whom this feeling is alien, who is no longer capable of wonderment and lives in a state of fear is a dead man. To know that what is impenetrable for us really exists and manifests itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty, whose gross forms alone are intelligible to our poor faculties - this knowledge, this feeling ... that is the core of the true religious sentiment. In this sense, and in this sense alone, I rank myself among profoundly religious men."

Albert Einstein
