Stormy Sea #3

For a couple of weeks our coast has been battered by a series of severe storms, sometimes gusting as high as Force 11, and bringing horizontal rain/hail/snow with them. The conditions have not really been suitable for removing the lens cap!

Tirpitz

On 12th November 1944 British forces bombed and sank a German battleship named "Tirpitz" off the Norwegian coast. About 950 people were killed. The only things left to be seen on the island of Håkøya now are the commemorative plaque and the wooden structure in the water that was the working platform used for the scrapping of the vessel. Bomb craters from the ones that missed are also still visible on the island.

Belt of Venus

The anti-twilight arch or "belt of Venus" is the pink band that you sometimes see across the sky opposite the sunrise or sunset. It is caused by reddened sunlight mingling with the deep blue of the darkened sky. Below it you sometimes see a darker purplish band which is the shadow of the Earth itself on its own atmosphere.

For more information on this atmospheric optical phenomenon follow this link: http://www.atoptics.co.uk/atoptics/earshad.htm

Sunrise #3

Or was it a sunset?

This far north in November the sun puts in such a brief appearance that it evades definition.

Ersfjordelva

Yesterday's snow has melted, only to be followed by torrential rain, which means swollen rivers like this one.
